Prospect Watch: The Chihuhuas have now won eight out of ten games, and the first two of the series. … Bryce Johnson, 30, who cleared waivers after he was designated for assignment last week and was outrighted to El Paso, reached base twice and logged a stolen base in his first game back with the Chihuahuas. The switch-hitter spent parts of 2024 and 2025 in the Sun City, and had been batting .178 in 49 sporadic plate appearances with the big club this year. … Mason McCoy hit his seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning and now has a slash line of .296/.368/.452 on the season. McCoy has primarily been the team’s shortstop this year, but has also seen time at second and third base. … With two hits on Wednesday, Carlos Rodriguez now has a 22-game hitting, tied for the longest in the PCL this season. He is seven games shy of the team record, set by Alex Dickerson in 2016. … Germán Márquez, 31, got the victory, tossing five innings of three-run ball. He wasn’t at his sharpest, giving up five hits and allowing three walks as only landed 52% of his pitches in the zone, but he limited the damage. His fastball sat at 95 mph as he stretched out to 73 pitches in what could be his final rehab appearance. The veteran right-hander now has a 1.76 ERA across four starts and 15.1 innings as he works back from a forearm injury. This season with the Padres, he has a 3-2 record and a 5.76 ERA in 29.2 innings over six starts. … Former top Padres prospect Luis Urias went 1-for-5 against his original organization. Urias has a .330 batting average for the Aces. (John Conniff)

Key Statistics: DH Albert Fabian 1-for-3, BB; 1B Romeo Sanabria 1-for-2, 2 BB; RF Tirso Ornelas 2-for-4, 2B; CF Braedon Karpathios 1-for-3, HR (5) 2 RBI; SS Francisco Acuña 2-for-3, HR (4) RBI; RHP Miguel Mendez 3 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5K; RHP Johan Moreno IP, H, 2 ER, 3 BB, K; LHP Harry Gustin IP, 3 H, 3 R (1 ER), 3 K; RHP Clark Candiotti IP, 2 K

Prospect Watch: The Missions took the opener at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, but had to settle for a split in a pair of shortened contests after Tuesday night’s rainout. Tirso Ornelas hit a three-run home run to put the visitors on top, but the Hooks rallied back to tie. In the seventh and final inning, Braedon Karpathios drew a bases-loaded walk to give the visitors the lead. Josh Mallitz came on to pick up the save after Eric Yost threw six strong innings. Yost picked up his first victory of the year, overcoming a bit of wildness that included three hit batters. Opponents are hitting just .180 against him, though he’s dealt with some nagging injuries that led to a two-week stint on the IL in May and have limited him to 40.2 innings – still the tops on the team. The 23-year-old now has a 3.54 in 11 games, six of them starts. In an interview that will be up on the site in the next week, Yost attributed his success to having better command of his breaking pitches to set up his fastball. In the nightcap, San Antonio again took an early 3-0 lead on a two-run home run by Karpathios and a solo shot by Francisco Acuña in the second inning, but again couldn’t hold the lead. … Miguel Mendez had another disappointing start, needing 71 pitches to get through three innings. While the right-hander continues to show a high-octane fastball, he is learning when – and when not – he can deploy his changeup and slider effectively. The 23-year-old has posted a 5.85 ERA since a neck strain put him on the IL in early May. He’s logged only 20 innings in seven outings since returning, striking out 23 against 11 walks. … In the opener, Ethan Salas walked three times and stole his career-high 13th base of the year. He was also caught once and is now 13-for-17 on the year. His batting line has dropped off to .282/.352/.432. … Ornelas, 26, finished his day 3-for-7 with the homer, a double, and three RBI. After spending all of 2024 and the majority of 2025 in Triple-A El Paso, the organization returned the Tijuana native to San Antonio this season. He hit .323/.385/.495 in May, but has struggled to a .174/.269/.371 line this month. (John Conniff)

Prospect Watch: The Storm topped the Giants as they got a number of regulars a day off in a Wednesday afternoon matinee the day after clinching a playoff spot. … Dawson Willis made his full-season debut Wednesday and had a pair of doubles as part of a three-hit afternoon. The undrafted free agent made his pro debut in the desert this season and demolished complex league pitching, hitting .323/.389/.646 with four homers in 16 games. Willis started all 60 games at third base for Oklahoma in 2025. … Qrey Lott had a pair of hits, including his fifth homer of the season. The 21-year-old came into Tuesday in a 3-for-24 slump after hitting .328 in May. Lott also added a pair of stolen bases, giving him eight this season. Lott is yet another impressive undrafted find. He has an .807 OPS in 35 games this season. … After striking out 12 batters in his last outing, Jesus Castro didn’t flash the same stuff he did last time out. He was able to grind out five innings, allowing four runs (three earned), walking one, and striking out three. The 18-year-old has allowed 49 hits in 48 innings this year, but he’s only allowed one homer. He’s been able to mitigate a lot of that damage by notching 56 strikeouts in 48 innings. In 11 starts, Castro has a 3.00 ERA. (Kevin Charity)
